About me: David J Reid

Radio documentary maker, filmmaker, DOP, Camera
As the media has changed, I've tried to become a bit of everything. I am an on-screen reporter, cameraman, editor and producer. I work in print, radio and TV.
I started as a newspaper journalist for a couple of years, and then worked as a reporter in Central America and the Caribbean for local TV and BBC World Service Radio.
In Central American I reported on everything from machete murders to drug fueled gang violence; there was also a curious story when a severed leg and arm washed up on the shore, but that's for another time. I also got a firm introduction to development issues, the environment and politics. Among many highlights was the chance to report from Haiti when deposed President Jean-Bertrand Aristide was returned to power.
I moved back to Europe to study for a Masters in International Relations, followed by a stint reporting on intractable conflicts in Kashmir, south-eastern Turkey, Western Sahara. I then moved to France where I worked as a self-shooting filmmaker for the BBC, the UN, the Council of Europe, the European Commission and a number of others. I was already a keen photographer, so I didn't find it too difficult to pick up a video camera.

Since moving to India, I have been employed as much as a cameraman and DOP (director of photography) as I have as a reporter. The shooting has always been something I have worked hard to master. It's fascinating and kind of takes over. It was a thrill then in 2017 to get to work as DOP and cameraperson on the BBC's Innovators series, which was funded by the Gates Foundation, as well as the BBC's 100 Women Challenge.
